Foxhunt is a mobile platform that detects and geolocates public safety radio transmissions in real time, giving drivers awareness of law enforcement and emergency activity along their routes. Each device in the network functions as a passive sensor node, collectively building an RF propagation map that improves with every user.
Three-Node Architecture
Foxhunt operates as a distributed sensing pipeline spanning three environments — each optimized for a specific role.
Scanner Unit
Dual SDR hardware captures P25 control channel traffic and measures uplink signal strength on active voice frequencies. Narrowband FFT filtering provides ~23 dB processing gain, and Doppler extraction from IQ phase rotation adds bearing information.
Mobile Sensor Node
Android app provides continuous GPS, stamps each RF observation with position and bearing, and displays results on a Waze-style map interface. Android Auto integration puts detection data directly on the vehicle's head unit.
Geolocation Engine
Cloud backend runs a parallel Bayesian grid search fusing six techniques: RSSI range estimation, Doppler bearing, terrain-aware propagation (SRTM), road network masking (367K OSM segments), talkgroup geographic priors, and rate-of-change analysis.
Data Flywheel
Every device deployed is a calibrated RF sensor contributing to a crowdsourced propagation map. More users produce better data, better data improves algorithms, improved algorithms attract more users. The consumer app funds distribution; the RF dataset is the business.
Beyond Consumer: The Overwatch Data Platform
The same hardware that powers consumer situational awareness can passively map RF propagation across broad swaths of spectrum. Wireless carriers spend tens of millions annually on drive testing — AT&T has told the FCC that testing just 10% of their network costs $18M per year. A fleet of Foxhunt sensors produces categorically superior data: calibrated hardware, passive multi-carrier measurement, professional-grade GPS. The consumer app is the distribution mechanism; enterprise RF intelligence is the revenue engine.
